How To Talk to a Loved One about Needing a Care Home

Talking about a care home with an elderly loved one can be an emotional time for the whole family. Read on for helpful tips.

Going into care can be a difficult subject to discuss. But if you have genuine concerns for a loved one’s safety and welfare, then talking about a care home and their future care options is a necessary conversation to have.

Talk about care while there’s time.

The sooner you talk about a care home, the sooner you can identify any hesitations your loved one may have. This also gives them time to consider all the available options and the one that benefits them. Subsequently, it avoids having to make a rushed decision because their living situation has become critical.

Include your siblings.

Involve as many family members as possible. This way, everyone can support the decisions made and responsibilities can be shared.

Be patient.

If your loved one is reluctant to broach on the subject, maybe try and kindly ask why they don’t want to talk about care. Maybe they would rather talk to a friend or medical professional.

Ask them how they feel.

They may be in denial that they need any help or increased care. One reason for this may be a fear of losing independence. Try to understand their situation and reassure them you’re only trying to help and make life easier for them.

Highbury House Celebrates Good Care Month with Samba

Highbury House Nursing Home in Rottingdean held their annual Summer Party, and this year the theme was Samba! They were lucky enough to have the amazing Silver Sounds join us who are Brighton’s senior samba band.

Musicians playing on percussive instruments before an elderly audience

Residents, relatives, friends and staff all enjoyed the party which included a BBQ and plenty of fun and games. Residents had great fun listening to the drums and percussion and even got to join in playing their own instruments.

Relatives and friends got to spend a special day with their loved one, which can sometimes be difficult in a nursing home when not all residents are able to venture outside of the home, the party was a day they could spend together with a slight change of scenery with the dining room being taken over by the band.

The Highbury team were more than happy to join in ensuring our residents had the best day.

The team were a huge part of making this day a great one for our residents. Their hard work and dedication shined through. It was a time for us to all be together as one big family.
